Long Island, NY, boasts many historic lighthouses, including one commissioned by George Washington. On Fire Island’s west end, east of Robert Moses State Park, the Fire Island Lighthouse opened its doors in 1827. This lighthouse remains open year-round, except on Christmas, Thanksgiving, and Easter. Visitors can enjoy a museum and gift shop, along with seasonal events like the New Year’s Day Hike and Lighthouse Tower Tour, and Valentine’s Day events.

Adventure-seeking travelers can purchase tickets for tours that lead up the 192 winding steps of the lighthouse tower—offered daily during the summer and on weekends in other seasons.

Additionally, couples can hold their wedding ceremony on the terrace of the Keepers Quarters (receptions not allowed).

Lastly, the Montauk Lighthouse holds the title of being the oldest—and the first—lighthouse in New York State, inaugurated in 1796 during George Washington’s presidency.

If you’re feeling adventurous, consider climbing the 137 iron steps to the top of the tower, where a spectacular view awaits (available from March to December). For those seeking a romantic setting, the lighthouse also offers the opportunity to hold wedding ceremonies.

Throughout the year, exciting special events occur at the Montauk Lighthouse, including the annual Lighting of the Lighthouse and Christmas at the Lighthouse, both taking place in November.
