The Memphis Zoo has been one of the city’s most popular attractions since its founding in 1906. With approximately 2,800 animals representing 400 species across 70 scenic acres, the Zoo offers hours of entertainment and education for both kids and adults alike.

• The first resident of the Memphis Zoo was a black bear named Natch, who was a retired baseball mascot.
• The Zoo was home to the world’s longest-living hippopotamus, “Adonis,” who lived to be 54 years old before passing in 1965. He fathered around 25 offspring, earning the Zoo the title of the “hippo capital of the world.”
• The iconic lion roar featured at the start of classic MGM movies was recorded in the old Carnivora Building at the Memphis Zoo. This lion, known as “Volney,” passed away in 1944.
