Explore Butterfly Wonderland: A Stunning Nature Experience in Scottsdale, AZ

Introduction to Butterfly Wonderland

In May 2013, Butterfly Wonderland opened in Scottsdale, Arizona. Located on Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community land, it stands as one of several attractions within a development called OdySea in the desert. Butterfly Wonderland claims to be “America’s Largest Butterfly Atrium,” housing thousands of butterflies. However, visitors should be prepared for an engaging experience right from the start. Begin your journey with the captivating 3D film, “Flight of the Butterflies,” which has been edited to approximately 15 minutes to suit younger audiences.

After enjoying the film, guests proceed to the Butterfly Emergence Gallery, witnessing the incredible third stage of butterfly metamorphosis up close. Many visitors may initially think the exhibit is staged, but it is indeed real. With keen observation, you might even spot a butterfly hatching right before your eyes.

The Butterfly Conservatory

The butterfly conservatory is undoubtedly the highlight of any visit. This 10,000 square foot rainforest features a koi pond and a butterfly bench perfect for family photos. Here, you will likely spend the majority of your time, provided your little ones do not have a fear of flying insects. Expect to see children squealing with delight at the sight of butterflies resting among the foliage, feeding on fruit bowls, and even landing on their heads. Hence, it’s advisable to keep your camera ready!

After exploring the conservatory, take a moment to visit the café for a refreshing snack or drink. You can also explore a bee colony, ant farms, Amazonian fish, and a stingray touch tank. Your experience will conclude in the vibrant and well-stocked gift shop, where you will find an array of unique items suitable for both children and adults.

Interesting fact: Butterfly Wonderland offers special closed-captioned Spanish 3-D movie screenings for those who prefer Spanish translation.

10 Things to Know Before You Go

  • The only information regarding the butterflies in the atrium is available in the brochure provided upon entry. This brochure features more than 30 butterfly varieties; however, not all butterflies in the brochure are guaranteed to be present at the atrium, and not all butterflies in the atrium are included in the brochure.
  • Butterfly Wonderland lacks interactive technology. There are no screens or educational games for children, which may seem outdated for some. This attraction is entirely focused on natural sights and sensory experiences, which can be refreshing.
  • The butterfly atrium maintains a warm and humid environment year-round, to support butterfly comfort. Prepare yourself for potential hair frizz due to the humidity!
  • Visits follow a logical flow: enter, restrooms, film, emergence gallery, butterfly conservatory (atrium), café, ant/bees/fish exhibits, and finally the gift shop. You can skip sections that do not interest you, but it is encouraged to follow this circular route. Keep in mind, you must pass through the gift shop to return to the restrooms!
  • For the best experience, visit early in the morning just after opening to avoid crowds and witness butterflies when they are most active. In the late afternoon, butterflies tend to be quieter and rest.
  • Admission prices are relatively high. If you plan to visit more than a few times a year, consider an annual pass for better value.
  • Tickets purchased online are date-specific and are not available at a discounted rate.
  • The IMAX movie you watch at the start of your visit lasts about 15 minutes, with 3D glasses provided. It’s a beautifully presented film.
  • Depending on the interest level of your children, and if you stop for snacks in the café, your visit may last anywhere from 1.5 to 2 hours. Photography enthusiasts looking for the perfect butterfly shot are welcome to stay all day.
  • The gift shop is a paradise for butterfly lovers, featuring products across all price ranges for all ages, making it an excellent stop for unique gifts.
