The Unisphere: A Cultural Icon in Queens, New York

The Unisphere is a stunning steel globe located in Flushing Meadows-Corona Park in Queens, New York. It has become the symbol of Queens, renowned for its visibility to drivers on major highways like the Long Island Expressway, Grand Central Parkway, and Van Wyck Expressway. Additionally, airline passengers arriving or departing from LaGuardia and JFK airports can easily spot this iconic landmark. The Unisphere stands as the best representation of the borough and is one of the largest globes ever constructed.

1964 World’s Fair Symbol

The Unisphere was created for the 1964 World’s Fair by the U.S. Steel Corporation and serves as a powerful symbol of world peace, reflecting the event’s theme, “Peace Through Understanding.” Since its inauguration, the Unisphere has attracted visitors, soccer players, museum attendees, theatergoers, Mets fans, and the diverse community of Queens.

This magnificent structure, designed by the acclaimed landscape architect Gilmore Clarke, measures 140 feet in height and spans 120 feet in diameter, weighing an impressive 900,000 pounds. The sculpture’s design accounts for its top-heavy nature, resulting from the uneven distribution of its continents. A beautifully landscaped pool and fountains surround the Unisphere, creating the illusion of it floating above the ground. Moreover, it is dramatically illuminated at night, enhancing its grandeur.

However, the Unisphere faced neglect over the decades along with Flushing Meadows-Corona Park, leading to noticeable deterioration by the 1970s. Consequently, in 1989, a 15-year renovation plan was initiated to restore both the park and the Unisphere to their former glory. By 1994, the revitalized park was unveiled, showcasing a repaired and thoroughly cleaned globe. The surrounding pool and fountains underwent restoration as well, with additional spray jets added. This conservation effort, complemented by new landscaping, helped preserve this iconic structure, which earned its designation as a City Landmark in 1995.

Views of the Unisphere

One of the finest views of the Unisphere can be found while driving south on the Van Wyck, where the Manhattan skyline forms a stunning backdrop. If timed perfectly, visitors can witness a spectacular sunset illuminating the scene. Although the close-up views available within the park are appealing, some unexpected perspectives can be enjoyed from the side streets of Flushing, particularly west of Main Street.
