The Children’s Museum of Tacoma can be the perfect destination for young children during a summer afternoon or as a fun activity during school breaks. It is also a great complement to a visit to the Tacoma Art Museum. Located in the downtown area, this museum is near various other attractions, making it convenient for families. The exhibits here are aimed primarily at children while keeping parents engaged in their kids’ creativity.
Unlike other museums in Tacoma, this one is specifically designed for kids aged eight and younger, as well as their families — with no fixed admission fee. The museum operates on a “pay as you will” basis, meaning that visitors are encouraged to contribute if they can, but if not, everyone is still warmly welcomed!
The Children’s Museum of Tacoma isn’t about wandering through galleries; rather, it focuses on play. This unique approach allows young children to learn through interaction and fun.
Playscapes at Children’s Museum of Tacoma
The exhibits at the Children’s Museum of Tacoma cater to children under eight, including babies. There are both permanent exhibits (referred to as Playscapes) and temporary ones, ensuring that returning visitors always find something new. Each Playscape is accompanied by a Resource Guide to aid parents in supporting their children’s educational play experiences.
There are five themed Playscapes, each designed to engage kids differently. Note that while the names may remain the same, the activities may vary on subsequent visits:
- Becka’s Studio: An area encouraging creative expression, often incorporating learning activities around math and science, such as working with shapes and counting.
- Woods: This Playscape resembles an outdoor playground, allowing children to climb, explore, and even build forts.
- Water: Filled with engaging water toys, kids can interact with waterfalls and play in still-water pools. This area is always a favorite!
- Invention: A place for aspiring builders, equipped with various toys and sets for creative construction and learning.
- Voyager: A vessel designed to ignite imaginations where children can pretend to sail, load cargo, and more.
All Playscapes aim to provide enjoyment while fostering learning experiences. Consequently, it’s no surprise that kids love spending time here!
Programs Beyond Play
The Children’s Museum of Tacoma is also home to various camps. While older children have many options, this museum hosts thoughtful winter, spring, and summer break camps particularly for kids aged 3-6.
Additionally, there is a preschool program designed for both toddlers and young children, which is quite popular and may often have a waitlist.
If you’re eager to join the fun with a child, grandchild, younger family member, or friend, the Play to Learn program offers a walk-in experience where adults and kids can interact through engaging activities.
