Train Travel Discounts for Seniors
In the United States and Canada, seniors traveling by train have the opportunity to take advantage of various discounts offered by Amtrak and VIA Rail Canada. However, train travel in Mexico is quite limited, and senior discounts are generally not available unless the traveler has a disability.
United States Senior Train Travel Discounts
In the US, passenger train service is provided by Amtrak. Seniors aged 65 and older are eligible for a 10 percent discount on train tickets. This discount usually applies to the lowest available fare. Furthermore, if your train journey crosses into Canada, a 10 percent discount will also apply to VIA Rail Canada travel for seniors aged 60 and older.
It’s essential to note that some restrictions are in place. Senior travelers are unable to receive discounts on Acela Express train travel during weekdays, saver fares, Auto Train trips, business class, first class, Amtrak Thruway, or sleeper car tickets. Additionally, senior discounts cannot be combined with other offers from Amtrak. Be prepared to provide proof of age when purchasing discounted tickets, as your rail car attendant may also request this information. Passengers with disabilities should reach out to Amtrak as early as possible to arrange necessary assistance.

Typically, seating on Amtrak trains is first come, first served. Accessible seats for individuals using mobility aids are available in coach class, along with designated wheelchair spaces. Amtrak offers assistance with storing medications that require refrigeration. For all accessible travel services, it is recommended that passengers provide at least 72 hours’ notice.
Canada Senior Train Travel Discounts
VIA Rail Canada extends a 10 percent discount to seniors aged 60 and older for train travel. This discount is applicable to the Economy Class full adult fare and also the regular Touring, Sleeper, and Sleeper Plus fares. Senior discount tickets may be purchased online after checking eligibility. Tickets are also available through phone orders, via VIA Rail Canada ticket counters, and travel agents.
VIA Rail is committed to assisting with your luggage and offering priority boarding if requested in advance. It is advisable to arrive early at the train station if you have arranged for these services. VIA Rail cars are equipped with wheelchair tiedowns, though the storage for wheelchairs and scooters may vary by rail car type.
If you require the assistance of a support person, they may be entitled to a free VIA Rail ticket. To facilitate this, you need to contact VIA Rail and provide documentation of your necessity for assistance at least 48 hours prior to your trip.
Mexico Senior Train Travel Discounts
In Mexico, routine passenger train travel is limited to the Chepe train, which runs between Chihuahua and Los Mochis. As stipulated on the Chepe train website, senior discounts are not available on this route. Travelers can choose from two classes of rail service. Trains depart from Chihuahua at 6:00 a.m. on Mondays, Thursdays, and Saturdays, arriving at Los Mochis just before 9:30 p.m. Conversely, trains from Los Mochis to Chihuahua leave at 6:00 a.m. on Tuesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays.
The Chepe Express train operates a same-day round trip from Creel to Los Mochis. Travelers can extend their stay in either Creel or Los Mochis for as many nights as they desire before returning.
It is important to note that you cannot reach the Chepe train’s terminal stations from the United States by train. However, there is a bus service from Tucson, Arizona, to Los Mochis, Mexico, where you can board the Chepe train. Additionally, flying to either Chihuahua or Los Mochis is also an option.
