Karni Mata Temple: Rajasthan’s Unique Rat Temple

Bikaner may be known for its camel safaris and impressive fort in the state of Rajasthan, but it is its unique temple in the town of Deshnok that attracted us to the area. The Karni Mata Rat Temple just may be the freakiest attraction we’ve ever been to.

The Karni Mata Temple could be considered one of India’s strangest attractions.

The Story of Karni Mata

As our guide explained to us…

The Goddess Karni Mata belonged to the Charin clan during her earthly life. She lived to be 150 years old while remaining eternally youthful. After passing away, she transformed into a rat.

The Charin followers believe that once they leave this world, they too will reincarnate as rats, and in turn, when a rat dies, it will return as a human.

Thus, the cycle continues.

Interestingly, even during the historic plague, the town of Deshnok was spared.

Worshippers visit the Karni Mata Rat Temple not only for devotion but also to seek healing for various ailments.

An intriguing fact shared by many is that these rats never leave the temple premises, despite having the freedom to do so. After all, why would they leave when they enjoy a consistent supply of delicious milk and snacks?

The White Rat of Karni Mata Temple

It is believed to be lucky to spot a white rat, and we were fortunate enough to see one dart around the temple grounds.

However, it is a challenge to catch sight of one; as soon as it emerges, hordes of tourists and pilgrims rush to catch a glimpse.

Before long, it scurries back into a crevice.

One could only imagine that this little rat might think to its companions, “Why don’t I ever have a chance to eat in peace like the rest of you? Every time I come out for a snack, I’m pursued by these silly humans.

Interestingly, it is also considered auspicious for rats to scurry over your feet.

Indeed, Dave and I must have been blessed, as they trotted over to us more times than I would like to acknowledge.

Perhaps our unwashed feet from lack of showers attracted them, or maybe we are simply the chosen ones!
