Kyaiktiyo Pagoda
One of the most remarkable places to visit in Myanmar is the legendary Kyaiktiyo Pagoda. Located in Kyaiktiyo, just a few hours east of Yangon, the Golden Rock is an extraordinary marvel seemingly balancing off the side of a mountain.
Standing 25 feet high with a 50-foot circumference, this stunning sight captivates visitors. Situated in the Mon State of Myanmar, our journey involved a long public bus ride to witness this wonder.
According to legend, the Golden Rock is poised on the hair of Buddha, making it the most significant pilgrimage site in the country. The hair was entrusted to a hermit by Buddha himself, who subsequently discovered a boulder resembling his own head. A small stupa was then built atop this remarkable stone, leading countless pilgrims to visit, offer prayers, and meditate. However, during our visit, it felt more like a joyous celebration than mere meditation.
The atmosphere was vibrant and welcoming, as individuals came together to marvel at this magnificent structure. Not only does the Golden Rock draw crowds due to its astonishing perch on the cliff’s edge, but it also radiates a powerful spiritual energy that resonates with everyone present.
During our experience, Dave had the opportunity to touch the Golden Rock. Although women were not permitted to touch it during our visit, he described the sensation as incredible, feeling the rock’s precarious balance on the cliff. The mystery of how this enormous boulder has maintained its position over the centuries left us in awe, and we couldn’t help but believe that something extraordinary was at play.
