Experience Bamboo Rafting on the Scenic Li River in Yangshuo

1. A visit to Yangshuo, China would not be complete without a bamboo cruise on the Li River.

2. Our Experience: Departing early to avoid the rush, we embarked on a 1-hour drive to Yangdi for a unique bamboo rafting experience.

3. The Scenic Li River: Our journey down the Li River revealed stunning landscapes and traditional lifestyles that have withstood the test of time.

Our driver picked us up bright and early to beat the rush of tour boats. It was 6:30 am when we departed for our 1-hour drive to Yangdi to catch the boat to XingPing. We were the first ones there and the mist had barely started to rise above the numerous limestone cliffs.

Our raft

Our boat was more modern than we expected. Initially, I envisioned men using bamboo poles to push us down the river on a fragile hull. Instead, we boarded a large raft made of plastic piping designed to resemble bamboo, comfortably seating four people.

The engine started up, interrupting the peaceful dawn, as we sipped strong coffee from paper cups, taking in the scenery and waving to other boats captained by locals heading to work.

Bamboo Rafting Down the Li River

We were grateful to be on a motorized boat. The distance between Yangdi and Xingping, the Li River’s most picturesque stretch, was significant, and I could hardly imagine the time a traditional bamboo raft would take to traverse it.

Lucy advised us to depart early, a decision that paid off since we encountered no other tour boats for the first hour. Our journey allowed us to observe life along the river with minimal disruption.

The Scenery of the Li River

The Li River truly lives up to its reputation. Much of this region is cloaked in fog year-round, contributing to the mystique of the landscape. As I looked around, I envisioned farmers and fishermen navigating these waters thousands of years ago.

Stepping Back in Time on the Li River

Aside from the engines of modern boats, people continue to live their lives in a traditional manner. Laundry is washed on the riverbanks, pots and dishes are cleaned in the waters, and women still gather seaweed by hand.

Although we couldn’t communicate with our captain, he was a friendly man who regularly pointed out notable sights. He held up a tissue box featuring the same mountains we were viewing. Additionally, he showcased another image that appeared on the 20 Yuan bill.

Exploring China’s Stunning Natural Beauty

It’s evident that Yangshuo is among China’s most stunning destinations. Foreigners have visited this enchanting location for over two decades, and it’s clear why—it was one of the first places to welcome tourists. The views along the Li River are extraordinary, showcasing calm waters that wind through massive karst formations disappearing into the misty horizon.

The Most Photographed Region in China

We spent two hours on the river on a cool morning, but with our down vests, waterproof jackets, and woolen hats, we were surprisingly warm. As other tour boats began to zoom past, we appreciated our early start. Just as we began to feel that we’d seen enough, our journey on the river concluded.

We arrived at a busy port filled with bamboo rafts awaiting the influx of tourists. As always, the locals were friendly, and an elderly man readily posed for Dave’s camera, beaming with happiness when he saw the picture.

On our way back to Yangshuo in our private minivan, we spotted lines of other vehicles arriving, and we knew we had relished a unique experience on the Li River.

Back at our hotel by 11:00 am, we were eager to explore more of the charming town. As the tourist season was winding down, the atmosphere felt relaxed and laid-back. With a welcoming vibe and a well-established backpacker infrastructure, Yangshuo is a destination where we could easily linger for days.

However, that adventure will have to wait for another trip.
