Summary
Stepping out of your comfort zone is the #1 message that I’m trying to spread through my travel writing. From my experience, it’s the best way to make the most of your time on the road.
If you are willing to travel, then you are already agreeing to step out of your comfort zone. You are eager to explore new territories, meet new people, try new foods, and immerse yourself in different cultures. This essence of travel is about creating new experiences, leading to lifelong memories.
What it Means to Step Out of Your Comfort Zone Abroad
Simply put, “Stepping out of your comfort zone” means engaging in activities that push your boundaries. I encourage you to challenge yourself in unfamiliar places and do things that deviate from your usual routines. This can mean various things to different travelers.
In my mind, stepping out of my comfort zone means:
- Engaging in extreme sports or activities (like bungee jumping)
- Asking locals for directions
- Approaching someone in a bar who speaks a different language
- Tasting unique foreign cuisine
- Exploring hidden parts of a city
- Living on the edge
Everything on this list can be achieved with a strong mentality. If you can envision it, then you can accomplish it!
Always New Possibilities
Every day while traveling, numerous opportunities arise to step out of your comfort zone. I strive to seize as many as possible, whether they are fun, crazy, exciting, or thrilling. Considering that it is unlikely you will encounter those you meet in foreign countries again, you can be whoever you want to be. That’s the approach to adopt!
By stepping out of my comfort zone over the years, I have crafted incredible and unforgettable experiences.
Unforgettable Experiences
I can’t even articulate how exhilarating it was to go bungee jumping in Switzerland from a height of 150 meters, or the thrill of cliff jumping in Greece.
Moreover, making close friends with a stranger in Sri Lanka who spoke no English exemplifies how stepping out of my comfort zone has enriched my life. These experiences have kept my hunger for discovery alive; there’s no doubt it’s the best way to live life.
Stepping Out of My Comfort Zone in Istanbul
On a summer afternoon in 2012, while exploring Istanbul with two friends, we chanced upon a street sign for a “Turkish Bath.” Agreeing without hesitation, we entered the building.
My Turkish Bath Experience
Having only heard about Turkish Baths from a friend, we were unaware of what awaited us.
As soon as we entered, we were met with looks from individuals who spoke no English. Essentially, we were instructed to undress completely and don a small skirt that did not fit properly. We then walked into a vast sauna, where an older Turkish gentleman scrubbed us down.
This man stretched every muscle in my body, deluging my head with buckets of icy, soapy water. I exchanged glances with my friend and thought, “What are we doing right now?”
Ultimately, it was a comical and unforgettable experience. I can now reflect fondly on this memory, all thanks to one decision: stepping out of my comfort zone.
Be brave, and you won’t regret it 🙂
