Since we first encountered vibrant balloons floating over the fairy chimneys, it has been a dream of ours. While relaxing in Istanbul, Dave arranged our inaugural hot air balloon ride over Cappadocia online. After sifting through numerous tour companies, we opted for the most costly option, believing it to be a once-in-a-lifetime adventure.

Since it was low season, we received a deal. For €140, we were upgraded to a comfort tour that provided larger baskets with more space, solidifying our excitement for the flight over the enchanting chimneys.

We’ve experienced several hot air balloon tours worldwide, and typically, they offer generous meals. Therefore, we were taken aback by the limited breakfast consisting of a few pastries and some tea and coffee on our Cappadocia tour.

However, since we usually had breakfast post-flight, we assumed this was merely a light snack. Regardless, we were here primarily for the flight, not the meal.

Note: In Cappadocia, breakfast is served before your hot air balloon ride, unlike other balloon experiences we’ve had across four continents. Thus, our small snack was indeed our breakfast.

Eventually, we waited a considerable time for the vans to transport us to our launch site. Rumors suggested a celebrity wedding delayed our departure, yet they never arrived.

Once we were en route, the morning was already late. Upon reaching the launch site, numerous balloons were already inflated and airborne.

The Launch Area Makes All the Difference

With the sun rising above the horizon, we were left wondering if we were late due to the celebrity confusion or if this was standard practice for them.

Dave conveyed his concern that we might miss the sunrise. Voicing our frustrations to our guide, I remarked, “You market yourselves as the best, hence the premium prices. Why are we taking off last?”

According to their website, Voyager Balloons employs experienced guides capable of navigating low through the fairy chimneys. Their expertise should enable them to fly where others can’t.

Fairy Chimneys of Cappadocia

The captivating Fairy Chimneys of Cappadocia evoke a sense of wonder; they reminded us of the hoodoos of Alberta.

However, we didn’t actually fly through the fairy chimneys as expected, perhaps due to misinterpretation of “flying through fairy chimneys.” Nonetheless, we certainly enjoyed ample views of these unique formations.

We’ve designated Cappadocia as one of the most romantic getaways in the world, a sentiment we wholeheartedly agree with.

Our Second Cappadocia Hot Air Balloon Flight Was Better than the First

During this flight, we missed the quintessential shots of numerous Cappadocia balloons gracefully filling the sky.

We consistently found ourselves either hovering above or right amid the balloons.

Because it was low season, around 100 balloons were airborne, fewer than the usual 150. While the flight itself was enjoyable, it was disappointing not to experience any close encounters with caverns or towering spires.

Instead of dwelling on our first Cappadocia hot air balloon experience, let’s focus on the remarkable second opportunity that exceeded all expectations.

Cappadocia Hot Air Balloon Ride Number Two!

Fortuitously, we had two chances to ascend over Cappadocia. The next morning, our hosts from a travel conference in Istanbul organized our flight with Royal Balloons. I must admit; my expectations were rather low.

Considering I expected the first experience to be the pinnacle, I was skeptical about how this second ride could possibly surpass it. Moreover, we weren’t booked on comfort balloons, but regular-sized ones. Nevertheless, I was eager for round two.

The day commenced significantly better than before, with a full buffet breakfast awaiting us at the hotel. It was a pleasant surprise to have the opportunity to sit down and enjoy a meal before taking off.

Despite the larger crowd, we were pleased to be divided into smaller groups and transported to different launch points.

Once airborne from a different location than before, we felt thrilled to watch the sun rise as we ascended, revealing the incredible Cappadocia landscape adorned with vivid hot air balloons.

Flying with Royal Balloons easily matched my high expectations. What lay before us was the vibrant balloon-filled sky I had anticipated, with countless balloons gliding over unique rock formations.

Fairytale Chimneys of Cappadocia

This time, our pilot demonstrated remarkable finesse, rising slowly while hovering closely to the fairy chimneys, creating a breathtaking experience. He guided us through narrow gorges and alongside the jagged peaks, prompting cheers of joy as we took in the spectacle around us. The panoramic views of colorful balloons surrounded us, ensuring we had the optimum vantage point.

Booking a Balloon Flight with the Right Tour Company

I soon realized that selecting the correct Cappadocia hot air balloon company is crucial for the best experience.

Launching from a less crowded area ensures that you can fully immerse yourself in the balloon-filled landscape above.

Moreover, the extent of the pilot’s experience plays a significant role in your flight experience. A less skilled pilot may not maneuver as effectively whereas an experienced pilot can navigate low through valleys.

With confidence and skill, he can manage the balloon with grace, allowing for stunning views. Additionally, our second pilot’s fluent English enhanced our appreciation of the geography while providing levity throughout the journey.

Clearly, the launch location greatly influences the experience. Our first flight put us amid many other balloons, preventing us from witnessing the full spectacle of the mass ascension.

Our second flight, however, departed from a more secluded area, granting us unobstructed views of the sky filled with balloons.

Although our pilot possessed immense skill, the limitations of hot air ballooning meant he could only float with the wind currents, changing altitude to navigate. By beginning at an ideal spot, he already provided us with the best perspective.

Dave and I believed we had done adequate research. We read numerous travel blog posts and scrutinized various websites.

The first company captivated us with their hefty pricing and sharp SEO. Their claims of superiority led us to believe we were making an informed choice. However, a few more inquiries could have served us well.

• How skilled are your pilots?
• Can we request a booking on the flight with your most skilled pilot? (Willing to pay more for this unique experience)
• Will they fly low in the valleys?
• Can they provide a mix of altitudes during the flight (as we experienced with Royal Balloons), or will they remain at a higher altitude?
• What is your launch point?
• Will you take off with the crowd or launch independently?
• How spacious is the basket and how many participants per ride?
• What kind of breakfast is provided? A full meal or just snacks?
• Am I speaking directly with the company owner/operator?

We had heard that Voyager also delivers great rides, indicating we may not have asked the right questions initially.

Do Your Research Before Booking a Hot Air Balloon Ride in Cappadocia

A trip to Cappadocia is a once-in-a-lifetime experience, and optimizing your hot air balloon flight is essential.

We were fortunate to have two opportunities. Without the second chance, we wouldn’t have realized what we missed.

Initially, I assumed those stunning photographs were heavily edited and thought our first experience represented the standard, suspecting travel bloggers exaggerated their adventures.

Experiencing an extraordinary flight on our second morning revealed the importance of the pilot we had.

It’s possible that the initial company did feature more experienced pilots, but our lack of questioning ultimately hindered our experience.

We made the mistake of equating cost with value, leading to a valuable lesson: inquire before committing. The internet can mislead unsuspecting customers.

Had we not experienced a second flight, we might have left pleased with our initial ride, unaware of what a true hot air balloon adventure in Cappadocia could offer. Which experience would you prefer?

• Dress in layers: at high altitudes, temperatures can drop significantly
• Pack a hat and gloves for colder mornings
• Bring sunglasses to protect your eyes

• Be the last to enter the basket for prime views and photography opportunities.

In conclusion, we thoroughly enjoyed our Cappadocia Hot Air Balloon experience.

Both rides concluded with a champagne toast and an opportunity to tip guides. Interestingly, Royal Balloons provided tangible photos rather than USB sticks with images.

We genuinely believe they should enhance their photography options to include entire trip compilations, offering customers a chance to purchase comprehensive memories for a reasonable price. Many would likely appreciate such a service.

Although Dave and I captured numerous photos, many others might enjoy having tangible memories of their Cappadocia hot air balloon adventures.
