Explore Reykjavik’s 5 Must-See Natural Wonders

When I first suggested a spa holiday to a city surrounded by breathtaking natural landscapes, my friend probably didn’t expect to be heading to Iceland with its chilly temperatures. However, after a bit of persuasion and the promise of relaxation followed by a few glasses of local “Moonshine,” we found ourselves on the way to Reykjavik, the capital city of Iceland.

Top 5 Natural Wonders of Reykjavik

Reykjavik is situated in southwest Iceland and boasts some of the world’s most stunning natural scenery. Majestic snow-capped mountains tower above geysers that shoot steam into the brisk air, while azure lakes nestle within ancient volcanic craters.

Geothermal Delights

Reykjavik is renowned for its natural hot springs due to its volcanic surroundings. Key geothermal attractions include:

  • Nauthólsvík: A beach on the south coast featuring an artificial spring, where swimmers can relax in waters around 20°C, as well as hot tubs with temperatures reaching between 35–42°C.
  • Laugardalslaug: This swimming pool in Laugardalur valley offers Jacuzzis, thermal baths, and an impressive 86-metre water slide.
  • Blue Lagoon: Perhaps the most famous hot spring, visitors can enjoy the natural benefits of geothermal seawater from mineral-rich hot springs.

Whale-watching

Reykjavik’s natural landscapes attract a variety of wildlife, with whales being among the most spectacular. Regular boat trips depart from Reykjavik harbor, providing guests with excellent opportunities to sight Minke whales, Sperm whales, Blue whales, Humpback whales, and Killer (Orca) whales.

One of the most enchanting times to witness these magnificent creatures in their natural habitat is at midnight during mid-summer, when the colors of the glowing midnight sun reflect off the sparkling ocean waters and the snow-dusted mountains.

Hiking

Hiking is an excellent way to discover the stunning capital region, featuring hundreds of trails leading to volcanic mountain ranges, nature reserves, cascading waterfalls, and the famous Golden Circle. Mount Esja, reaching 914 meters, is a favored hiking destination.

Various routes accessible on the mountain cater to hikers of all skill levels. Those who ascend to the summit are rewarded with panoramic views of the city, fjords, mountains, lava fields, and steaming hot springs below.

Additionally, nearby Videy Island, just a short boat ride away, offers numerous walking and cycling trails. The island also hosts Yoko Ono’s Imagine Peace Tower, a striking beacon that illuminates the sky as a call for world peace.

The Northern Lights

A primary reason for my visit to Reykjavik was to catch a glimpse of the famous Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis). This natural spectacle, with its scientific explanations, became an overwhelming experience as I witnessed luminous green and purple curtains ripple across the night sky.

This breathtaking phenomenon is a must-see, with the best viewing times occurring between September and April on clear nights. Numerous tour operators offer nightly excursions from Reykjavik city center, providing options to suit all budgets, from coach tours to private guided trips with accommodations.

Scuba Diving and Snorkelling

Despite its often frosty reputation, Iceland provides excellent conditions for scuba diving and snorkelling. With crystal-clear waters and mild currents (a 5mm wetsuit is recommended), divers and snorkelers can experience some of the world’s finest underwater adventures.

Silfra Lake in Thingvellir National Park is particularly notable, allowing divers to explore the fissure between the Eurasian and American tectonic plates, along with stunning underwater glaciers. Certified divers can venture to geothermal springs in Lake Kleifarvatn or participate in tours along Iceland’s southern coast to explore fascinating shipwrecks and diving sites.
