If I had to describe Tbilisi in one word, my answer would be simple: eclectic. The architecture spans the ages, giving it an eclectic personality with a blend of old and new.

Georgia is rapidly developing and is becoming one of the countries from the former Soviet-era bloc with the least amount of crime and corruption. Tbilisi, the capital of Georgia, is one of the safest cities in Europe.
With its love for food and wine, Georgia has a vibe similar to Italy but is more affordable. Additionally, it boasts geographic diversity, featuring breathtaking beaches and some of the tallest peaks in Europe.
Tbilisi is a vibrant city full of flavors and experiences that you simply cannot miss. There are countless things to do in Tbilisi, and below are my favorite highlights!
1. The Picturesque Old City
Tbilisi has endured wars and occupations throughout its history. Its location between Europe and Asia has made it a center of numerous conflicts.
Although it has been destroyed many times, a significant portion of the Old City of Tbilisi remains intact. You can easily lose yourself for hours, exploring ancient buildings and charming balconies. The colorful streets are dotted with boutiques that offer perfect possibilities for shopping souvenirs.
A peek through open windows and the many green yards will provide you with a truly authentic glimpse of everyday life in Tbilisi!
2. The Architecture Contrasts
Owing to its extensive and intricate history, which is full of invasions and cultural exchanges, Tbilisi’s architecture is remarkably eclectic. It is a unique place where East meets West.
Byzantine buildings from the Middle Ages coexist with Art Deco constructions. Meanwhile, traces of the stark Stalinist grandeur can be seen throughout the city.
Moreover, the modern-day buildings and massive glass structures, such as the Bridge of Peace, are must-see attractions in Tbilisi.
I appreciate how the newer architectural designs are fully transparent, symbolizing the government’s commitment to fighting corruption. The variety and eclectic nature of architecture in Tbilisi make it difficult to focus solely on one sight; instead, take in the entire view!

Tbilisi is situated at the foothills of the Trialeti mountain range along the Mtkvari River (Kura River), creating a stunning backdrop of rolling hills and flowing water.
There’s an aerial tramway that ascends the mountains, offering a scenic ride. You can take one of the cable cars from Rike Park on the left bank of the river up to Narikala Fortress, from where you can enjoy panoramic views of the city.

Narikala is a medieval fortress constructed in the 4th century, located next to the botanical gardens. It’s the ideal spot for capturing unforgettable photographs of Tbilisi, providing a truly magical atmosphere!
5. The Incredible Food & Hip Eateries
One of the most enjoyable aspects of exploring Tbilisi is indulging in its culinary delights. Georgia is a food lover’s paradise with a rich cuisine that has evolved over centuries. Don’t leave Tbilisi without trying some of my favorite Georgian dishes like Khachapuri, Khinkali, and Pkhali.
Consider enjoying a home-cooked meal for an authentic taste of traditional Georgian cuisine. While this might be challenging to arrange, Georgians are friendly, and you never know what connections you might make.

Tbilisi boasts an impressive food scene with beautiful outdoor settings and stylish indoor decor. Here are some of my favorite restaurants:
- Keto & Kote. An Old City gem, where the food is delicious, and the design harmoniously blends old and new. It’s an old house revived with a modern look!
- Lolita. Offering international cuisine with a Georgian flair, this trendy eatery also serves as a vibrant nightlife spot, particularly on weekends with its great ambiance and tasty cocktails!
- Iveria Terrace. Located at the Radisson Blu, this restaurant offers a magnificent view of Tbilisi, perfect for leisurely afternoons or nightcaps!
- Culinarium Khasheria. This establishment serves experimental cuisine that is based on traditional Georgian flavors, made with purely organic ingredients.
- Fabrika. A former Soviet sewing factory transformed into a chic brunch spot that features an amazing ambiance and delightful decor.
- Arthouse Tbilisi. This is a truly unique venue and the first clubhouse in Tbilisi, brimming with restaurants, clubs, a gym, and creative spaces. A must-visit!

Historians believe Georgia might be one of the oldest wine regions in the world, with wine-making dating back 8,000 years!

8. The Artsy Vibe
Tbilisi exudes an indescribable air of creativity. As a young city progressing into the future after a turbulent history, it possesses an invigorating spirit.
One of my favorite activities in Tbilisi is to visit and enjoy brunch at Fabrika, a former sewing factory turned creative hub.
The city is home to a diverse array of artists and creatives, evident in the numerous hip art murals and trendy hotspots scattered throughout Tbilisi.
9. A Visit to the Public Baths – A Must in Tbilisi!
Just outside the Old City, the ancient baths are among the most popular attractions in Tbilisi. Renowned throughout Eastern Europe, the sulfur baths of Abanotubani provide a one-of-a-kind experience.
These baths, thought to be beneficial for skin issues, are surrounded by beautiful Byzantine architecture. Each bath is a colorful marvel from the outside, and stepping inside feels like a journey back in time.
When planning your visit to the baths, consider a leisurely stroll along the Kura River; it’s a lovely experience.
10. Palpable History & Mtskheta
Georgia has been part of many ancient kingdoms and has remained a unified nation since the Middle Ages. The country has faced occupations from the Mongolians, the Ottoman Empire, Russia, and the USSR.
As an ancient and proud nation, Tbilisi, the capital of Georgia, proudly showcases its historical heritage. Its surroundings, too, speak volumes of its rich past. Consider organizing day tours to Mtskheta for an enriching experience, which is just a short trip away.
11. Sololaki Hill
A statue at the summit of Sololaki Hill, known as Mother Georgia, symbolizes the character of the nation. Holding a bowl of wine, she welcomes friends while wielding a sword to fend off foes.
Mtskheta is one of the oldest Christian settlements globally and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Just 30 minutes by car from Tbilisi, Mtskheta is an ideal day trip. It is regarded as a Holy City by the Georgian Orthodox Church, as it was the birthplace of Christianity in Georgia. So, if you’re up for an excursion, be sure to add Mtskheta to your itinerary.

Georgians are known for their remarkable hospitality, making the country one of the friendliest nations in Europe. You’ll find that locals are always eager to lend a hand.
My tour guide, Gaggi, epitomized this spirit: he didn’t merely guide me to landmarks; he revealed the heart of Tbilisi and even invited me into the homes of some locals. He emphasized that I wasn’t his client but his guest, which genuinely resonated with me.

Nothing quite compares to staying at a beautiful boutique hotel that provides a true experience infused with personal touches. With the charming hospitality, the stunning contrasts of Tbilisi, and the city’s unique vibe, you’ll find plenty of options here.
The hotels themselves can be a significant reason to visit. One of my favorites is The Rooms Tbilisi. Located in the Old City, specifically in the trendy area of Vera, this boutique hotel is a hipster’s dream.
A former publishing house, its current design blends industrial chic with New York aesthetics. It’s a cozy haven filled with books, offering lovely amenities and refreshments. A true gem!

Tbilisi is easily accessible by plane, as its airport receives flights from most Balkan capitals and many cities in Western Europe and the Middle East. The airport is located just 20 to 30 minutes from downtown and is expected to expand further in the near future!
For travelers seeking the road less traveled, Tbilisi deserves a spot on your bucket list! However, you might want to visit sooner rather than later, as it is increasingly appearing on more travel hot lists!
