It had been a great snowfall the night before, and now that it was the weekend, we were warned that the trails on Cougar Mountain would be busy today. Surprisingly, we barely saw another soul.
Our Whistler Snowmobile Tour
We arranged our snowmobiling trip with The Adventure Group (aka TAG) located in the heart of Whistler Village. A shuttle picked us up at a central location and whisked us out to the middle of the forest to commence an enchanting trip through snow-covered evergreen trails.
We arrived at the lodge just as giant snowflakes began to fall, making the scene feel even more like a fairy tale. The weather was pleasant, the snow was accumulating quickly, and we were excited to get on the sleds and enjoy the afternoon.

Neither Dave nor I had been snowmobiling since we were teenagers, but we’ve had our fair share of motorized vehicle adventures in recent years. From driving quad bikes to dune buggies and sailing zodiacs in the Alaskan waters, we felt confident behind the wheel of a sled. Thus, we signed up for an intermediate trip through the trails.
What It’s Like to Snowmobile Whistler
The intermediate tour was an excellent choice, offering amazing climbs and descents while reaching superb speeds. This wasn’t your average trail ride at 10 km/h; rather, it was a thrilling adventure through the mountains. We felt that our snowmobiling experience was perfect and, if anything, we desired more time because we had so much fun!
We began with a quick refresher course on how to start and stop the machines, and within minutes we were on the trail. I appreciated that our guide didn’t take it easy. We’ve experienced a few ATV tours recently where we moved slowly, but in Whistler, snowmobiling was exhilarating and fast-paced, with stops only when someone got stuck.
Getting Stuck on the Trail
Yes, I—Deb—got stuck in a snowbank. Following our guide at the front of our line of four, he navigated over an intimidating snowbank. I followed suit but encountered one that was just a bit too steep and deep, ultimately chickening out halfway. Oops.
A lesson learned: never slow down when attempting to drive over a snowbank. If only I had fully committed, but instead, I eased off the gas and got stuck. I had to signal our guide to return and help push me out. I felt somewhat embarrassed, but at least I didn’t roll the sled. Dave naturally maneuvered over every obstacle with ease.
Beautiful Scenery in Whistler Backcountry
The scenery was absolutely breathtaking. As the snow began to fall in large, fluffy flakes, we felt as if we were in a winter wonderland. While we were informed that on clear days we would see grand mountain vistas, we were already content with the fairy tale ambiance as we had enjoyed the same stunning views while snowboarding on Whistler and Blackcomb mountains. Snowmobiling through the thick flakes felt like a joyous Christmas experience—only better!
