On this adventurous day, we tackled the famous Misery Ridge Loop Trail, a challenging 3.8-mile (6.1 km) hike with a daunting 1000-foot elevation gain. We knew we were in for a tough trek.

The weather added to the challenge, as it was a cold and rainy day. Fortunately, we were accompanied by local photographer and guide Bo Baumgartner, who is extremely familiar with the area.

The trail begins at the Smith Rock Trail Head, just over the bridge, and immediately ascends along a rocky path.

Beautiful Scenery

As I huffed my way up the trail, Bo maintained a steady pace, making it look effortless. I attempted to chat while catching my breath—though I found it challenging to focus on our conversation. Bo shared insights about the stunning landscape around us, but all I could think about was getting to the top.

My hiking companion, Dave, appeared less fatigued but confessed later that he paused to take photos whenever he felt tired. I initially thought he was just being diligent with his photography, but it turns out it was a solid strategy. The hike wasn’t as miserable as the name implied; the views from the top were worth the effort.

I frequently stopped to admire the breathtaking vistas. It was astonishing how quickly we ascended to such heights, reaching the ridge in just about half an hour, after which we enjoyed an easier stroll.

Despite the chilly and windy weather, our Misery Ridge loop hike turned out to be an unforgettable experience. This trail is considered one of the most challenging in Smith Rock State Park. Nevertheless, the rain held off for our entire hike, and luckily, high wind warnings did not lead to any unexpected tumbles.

Monkey Face

After admiring the various outlooks at the top, we finally reached the iconic Monkey Face. This impressive 350-foot tall rock formation supposedly resembles a monkey’s face, although I struggled to see the comparison. Nonetheless, the sight was truly captivating. Climbers can tackle Monkey Face if they possess the required skills.

Sport Rock Climbing at Smith Rock

To wrap up our adventure, we took a break by the river to watch climbers navigate some easier routes. It’s important to note that “easy” in Smith Rock is relative. Bo explained that the volcanic rock presents a unique climbing experience. Regardless, it’s a fantastic place for climbers of all skill levels. Smith Rock State Park is particularly renowned for its challenging sport climbing routes.

The park features some of the most difficult sport and traditional climbing routes in the world. Bo expressed his ambition to tackle these challenging climbs one day—good luck with that, Bo!

We couldn’t ignore the emergency shelter at the bottom of the crag, complete with a stretcher and crutches—a sobering reminder of the risks involved! Fortunately, accessing the cliffs is made easier with well-maintained paths and steps bordered by wooden fences.

Smith Rock in Sunshine

Due to the overcast conditions during our initial trek, Dave was disappointed with his photography opportunities. Therefore, we decided to switch our Lava Tube tour to the afternoon of the following day. We woke up early again to visit Smith Rock and capture its stunning beauty in the golden morning light.

Our early morning effort truly paid off, as we were greeted with glorious views of Oregon’s wonder—a perfect reward for our determination.

Although we did not have the time to explore Monkey Face closely this visit, it has given us yet another incentive to return to Oregon and delve deeper into the splendor of its many attractions.

For lodging near Smith Rock, consider Brasada Ranch. If you’re staying in Bend, we found excellent accommodations at The Oxford Hotel downtown and Five Pine Lodge in Sisters.
