What to do in Jordan

We had the opportunity to visit much of the country and fell in love with its beauty, culture, and hospitality. Jordan is a destination to remember. So these are our top 10 things to do in Jordan that will make you want to pack your bags right now.

1. Ancient City of Petra

Petra is one of the great ancient cities of the world, and it definitely lives up to the hype. With monumental buildings carved into high cliffs, Petra will literally take your breath away as you walk through the deep, narrow gorge of the Siq to reach the Treasury square.

Dating back more than 2000 years, Petra was an important part of the Silk Route to China and India but was abandoned around the 12th century. It remained known only to locals for hundreds of years until rediscovered by the West in 1812. This legendary setting is so stunning that Hollywood has used Petra for filming locations in various movies.

2. Petra by Night

While visiting Petra during the day is incredible, experiencing it by night is nothing short of magical. When the sun sets, visitors follow candles that line the Siq all the way to the treasury, culminating in a traditional Bedouin performance.

Although the performance was average, the setting was breathtaking as hundreds of candles illuminated the treasury, creating an unforgettable atmosphere.

3. Little Petra

While Petra is the main attraction, be sure to visit Little Petra, also known as Siq al Barid, located a bit north. Archaeologists believe it was a suburb of Petra, showcasing ancient frescoes nearly 2000 years old. Like its larger counterpart, entrance is through a narrow siq, though on a smaller scale.

4. Float in the Dead Sea

The Dead Sea is famously salty, allowing you to float effortlessly in its waters. Consider booking a hotel directly on the sea for daily dips in these healing waters. It’s amusing to note that people can genuinely read newspapers while floating!

  • Where to stay at the Dead Sea:
    • Holiday Inn Dead Sea – This luxurious hotel is ideally located directly on the Dead Sea with a fantastic beach.
    • Kempinski Hotel Ishtar Dead Sea – A place of pure luxury.

5. Take a Therapeutic Mud Bath

The minerals of the Dead Sea possess healing properties, leading many to book retreats focused on rejuvenation. Enjoy the luxurious spas that utilize the healing waters and experience the rejuvenating effects of mud therapy for your skin.

6. Canyoning Wadi Mujib

Canyoning in Wadi Mujib is one of the most thrilling activities in Jordan. Easily accessible from the Dead Sea, this adventure includes rappelling down waterfalls and navigating through fast-flowing waters, making it an exhilarating way to beat the heat and embrace adventure in Jordan.

7. Wadi Rum

Wadi Rum is an extraordinary desert valley featuring narrow gorges, towering cliffs, and natural stone arches. Home to the Bedouins, this area has been inhabited for nearly 12,000 years and is strongly associated with T.E. Lawrence’s historical narratives.

8. Sleep in a Bedouin Camp

Experience an authentic Bedouin lifestyle by camping in Wadi Rum. Enjoy traditional meals prepared underground, ride camels at sunset, and sleep under the stars for a truly immersive experience.

9. Feynan Eco-Lodge

The Feynan Eco-Lodge prioritizes the preservation of Jordan’s natural resources. Hiring a local guide offers insight into the area’s flora, fauna, and ancient ruins. At night, enjoy the star-filled sky free from light pollution while sipping fresh tea atop the lodge.

10. Dana Nature Reserve

The Dana Biosphere Reserve offers a stunning landscape leading to the heart of Africa. This 15th-century stone village allows you to explore local life while hiking through the pristine nature reserve.

11. Jerash

If Roman ruins pique your interest, Jerash will impress. As one of the best-preserved ancient Roman cities outside Italy, its history spans over 6500 years. Gentle weather kept it largely untouched until excavations began in 1925.
