With only three hotels on the island, visitors can experience the charm of each accommodation. Our final night was spent at the Hotel Lanai in Lanai City. Given the unique characteristics of each hotel, it’s worth splitting your stay across different locations. However, due to the island’s small size, you can remain in one spot and easily visit various attractions throughout Lanai.
About Lanai
Accessing Lanai, known as the Pineapple Island, involves a scenic 40-minute ferry ride from Maui or a 30-minute flight from Oahu. Historically, Lanai was home to the Dole Pineapple Plantation that once produced 75% of the world’s pineapple. Pronounced La-nah-ee, it is the third smallest Hawaiian island and the smallest publicly accessible inhabited island. After arriving at Manele Harbor from Maui, we utilized the complimentary shuttle to reach the Four Seasons Resort Lodge at Koele for our first few nights before transitioning to the Four Seasons Manele.
Notably, Lanai is primarily privately owned, a distinctive characteristic among Hawaiian Islands. This development began in the late 19th century and reached a transformative moment when Oracle co-founder Larry Ellison acquired much of the island in 2012. His ownership has driven modernization while also focusing on conservation efforts that safeguard Lanai’s stunning landscapes and rich cultural heritage.
