13 Must-See Beaches for Your Bucket List

When you think of beaches, palm trees, golden sand, and crashing waves immediately come to mind. However, have you ever considered visiting a red beach? Or perhaps a beach where hot springs emerge from beneath the sand?

Unique Beaches of the World

Beaches and islands serve as some of the most captivating travel destinations. Here is a curated list of thirteen unique beaches that promise unforgettable experiences!

1. Playa Las Galeras-Samana, Dominican Republic

Known locally as “The Fisherman’s Beach,” this stunning location on the Samana Peninsula is one of the most beautiful beaches I’ve ever visited. Traveling there by road can be challenging due to the rutted paths, so opting for a boat is often the best choice.

This is the quintessential paradise beach reminiscent of fantasy. The vibrant colors are mesmerizing, and the biggest concerns often involve avoiding falling coconuts or running out of rum.

I did run out of rum once and enlisted a motorcycle driver to fetch me more! During my time there, I encountered few people—just a lovely woman who approached me to sell absolutely delicious coconut bread. What more could one ask for?

2. Sunrise Beach-Koh Lipe, Thailand

Koh Lipe Beach Thailand

The journey to Koh Lipe itself is quite an adventure. After a six-hour minibus ride followed by a ferry trip, I was finally transported to Sunrise Beach via a longboat.

Waking up to the sound of longboats departing for sea was delightful. Moreover, the picturesque views and tranquility of the water were awe-inspiring. The sunrises here are unparalleled, and snorkeling opportunities await just off the shore.

My accommodation was a hotel with palm cabanas directly on the beach, allowing me to enjoy sunrise views from bed. This remote spot truly offered a sense of escape from the world.

3. Railay Beach-Krabi, Thailand

Railay Beach Thailand

Surrounded by towering limestone cliffs, Railay Beach is visually breathtaking. The highlight for me, however, was the Hidden Lagoon, which requires a hike to reach but rewards you with stunning emerald-green waters.

The sand at Railay Beach is soft and inviting. I particularly enjoyed watching adventurous rock climbers tackle the cliffs rising above. For those seeking adventure, this beach offers kayaking, snorkeling, and hiking opportunities, making it the perfect destination.

4. The Split- Caye Caulker, Belize

Caye Caulker Belize

Unlike the typical beach, The Split is essentially a waterway that divides the island, converted into a beach by locals and tourists alike.

This lively area features a beach bar where people often gather to swim and relax. The atmosphere is incredibly laid-back, infused with a rasta vibe.

The clear waters are inviting, and if you wander toward the mangroves, seahorses can be spotted, adding a magical touch to your visit!

5. Madrigal Beach-Osa Peninsula, Costa Rica

Madrigal Costa Rica

Imagine soaking up the sun on a deserted beach while monkeys frolic in the jungle canopy nearby. This is precisely what I experienced on the Osa Peninsula—a stunning backdrop for relaxation.

The refreshing freshwater lagoon provided an ideal spot for swimming. The jungle is brimming with vibrant wildlife, including monkeys and scarlet macaws. Sunsets here are nothing short of magical, and it’s remarkable to witness both the sunrise and sunset from the same beach.

6. Puerto Viejo Beach, Costa Rica

Vejo Beach

Puerto Viejo exudes a Caribbean ambiance that is both relaxing and vibrant. While enjoying the scenery, you may even spot sloths in nearby trees!

This beach attracts surfers drawn by the impressive waves, offering opportunities for both spectating and participating in surfing lessons.

During the evening, the beach comes alive with fire dancers, creating an exhilarating atmosphere. It’s the perfect spot to unwind, sample local treats, and soak in the rich culture of the area.

7. Zipolite Beach-Oaxaca, Mexico

Zipolite Beach-Oaxaca

Known as “the beach of the dead,” Playa Zipolite is notorious for its dangerous currents but also boasts designated swimming areas.

I particularly enjoyed body surfing here, captivated by the stunning bluish-green water. The golden light characteristic of Oaxaca creates a captivating ambiance that attracts artists and photographers alike.

Witnessing the sunrise while surrounded by this mesmerizing light remains a cherished memory.

8. Playa La Poza-Todos Santos, Mexico

What sets this beach apart is the freshwater lagoon that flows into it, attracting an impressive variety of bird species including herons, egrets, and pelicans.

Due to the strong waves, I opted to stay on the shore and take in the captivating scenery. At certain times of the year, you can even spot whales close to the coastline, making this a must-visit destination for birdwatchers and beach lovers alike.

9. Playa Balandra-La Paz, Mexico

Playa Balandra features some of the clearest waters imaginable. While many choose to overlook La Paz for Cabo, doing so means missing out on this incredible beach.

Situated along a shallow bay, I enjoyed walking out until the water only reached my knees. The powdery white sand, along with the striking sand dunes, create an idyllic atmosphere reminiscent of a long-lost paradise.

10. Red Beach-Santorini, Greece

The red sands of this beach are truly a sight to behold! Nestled within a protected cove, the beach’s distinct hue derives from the nearby red lava rock cliffs, creating an otherworldly view.

The hike to the beach is worth every step, as the striking blue waters of the Aegean Sea contrast beautifully with the vibrant red cliffs, making for stunning photographs and cherished memories.

11. Super Paradise Beach-Mykonos, Greece

Mykonos’ Super Paradise Beach offers two very different experiences. In the morning, tranquility reigns, allowing for serene swimming. However, in the afternoon, the atmosphere shifts as the sun sets, ushering in lively music and dance.

Three beach bars line the shore, one featuring a cliffside swimming pool. The rhythmic beats draw visitors into an enthusiastic dance party, making it a decadent location for day-time revelry by the sea!

12. Trawangan Beach- Gili Trawangan, Lombok

A short boat ride from Bali, Gili Trawangan welcomes you with mesmerizing clear waters and a car-free environment, promoting a serene experience.

Here, snorkeling can be enjoyed with minimal gear, and watching the sun rise and set from the same spot is simply enchanting.

13. Hot Water Beach, Coromandel – New Zealand

The most unforgettable beach experience awaits at Hot Water Beach. During low tide, hot water seeps up through the sand, creating a surreal and tranquil setting.

By mixing in cold water retrieved from the ocean, I found my perfect temperature, lying back and relaxing in this unique spot—a heavenly combination of relaxation and ocean view.

Let these unique beaches inspire your next adventure in travel! Consider exploring new and unusual destinations for a truly memorable experience.
