Scenic Rocky Mountaineer Journey from Vancouver to Banff

The Rocky Mountaineer – Vancouver to Banff

Do you love trains? If you can’t get enough of them and dream of the ultimate train journey, look no further than the Rocky Mountaineer.

My passion for rail journeys was ignited watching Meg Ryan enjoy a luxurious train experience in the movie French Kiss back in 1995. After 24 years, I finally transformed that dream into reality by savoring gourmet cheese paired with fine wine on my own train adventure!

Pure Luxury on the Rocky Mountaineer

Our journey began with a limousine pickup from the Vancouver airport, whisking us away to The Sutton Place Hotel. It was astonishing to return to a place where I once worked as a Production Assistant in the film industry, reflecting on the actors who spent time at this hotel.

The outstanding view from our room set the perfect tone for our adventure. If you have the time, a couple of days exploring Vancouver is highly recommended. Although we had lived there, we only arrived the night before our early morning pickup.

The Train Experience

The Rocky Mountaineer operates seamlessly, boasting more than three decades of experience. At 6:00 am, luggage collection began, and as we enjoyed coffee in the lobby, our luggage was guaranteed to be waiting in our rooms upon arrival in Kamloops, allowing us to focus on capturing every moment with our cameras.

What to Pack for the Rocky Mountaineer Train

The train lacks overhead compartments, so all personal items must fit below your seat. Here’s what we recommend packing:

  • Light sweater
  • Outer windproof jacket
  • Scarf
  • Camera and phone
  • Chargers for devices – outlets are available at seats
  • Sunglasses
  • Medication

The Train Station in Vancouver

Arriving at the train station, we were enveloped in excitement as musicians entertained us with lively tunes while guests mingled with fresh juices in hand. Shortly after, we were summoned to board our train cars.

On the Train

The company you keep can truly enhance a journey. Fortunately, we shared the train with an amazing group, including Australians, Canadians, and well-traveled Americans, enriching our experience with their stories of global adventures.

Outdoor Viewing Platform

The outdoor viewing platform can get crowded; thus, if pristine photo opportunities are a must, claim your spot early for the best angles as the stunning scenery unfolds.

Traveling from Vancouver to Banff, we noticed that the left side of the train offers fewer sights compared to the right side, so plan accordingly when socializing with fellow travelers.

The Rocky Mountaineer Staff

Our fantastic servers enhancing our onboard experience!

The attentive staff kept our drinks filled and engaged us with stories of the Rocky Mountains as we traversed breathtaking landscapes.

Kamloops, British Columbia

Arriving in Kamloops in the evening, we were greeted by our luggage waiting in the hotel, which made check-in effortless as we hurried to drop off our belongings and explore.

After a day of adventure, we enjoyed a quick takeaway meal along the riverbank while mingling with friendly locals eager to share their love for the trains.

Day 2 – Rocky Mountaineer

Day two commenced bright and early, promising stunning views of the Rockies ahead. We were thrilled to discover picturesque lakes, tunnels, and glacial rivers greeting us along the route.

Arriving in Banff

As we neared Banff, we were treated to awe-inspiring views, notably the cascades of Castle Mountain, all illuminated by the sunset’s golden glow.

Options After the Train Journey

The Rocky Mountaineer offers several options for post-journey exploration. Whether you prefer organized tours, hotel stays, or self-drive adventures, ensure you’re ready to continue the Rocky Mountain experience.

Moraine Lake – Foiled Again!

Initially hoping to photograph Moraine Lake, severe rain and visibility issues led us to postpone our plans. Sometimes, the weather in the Rockies plays a role in our adventures.

Things to See in Banff – The Highlights

Banff offers countless activities and natural wonders, making it a challenge to choose. Here are some highlights:

  • Banff Upper Hot Springs – Relax in natural healing waters.
  • Cave and Basin – Explore Canada’s oldest national park.
  • Bow Valley Parkway – A stunning alternative route with scenic hikes.
  • Postcard View of Banff – Perfect overlook from the Cascade of Time Garden.

Kananaskis Mountain Lodge

As our journey in Banff concluded, we traveled onward to Kananaskis Mountain Lodge. Here, relaxation and adventure harmonize beautifully, especially with the added luxury of a Nordic Spa.

Among the various amenities are delightful dining options and stunning views of Kananaskis Mountain Range, perfect for a serene end to an unforgettable experience on the Rocky Mountaineer.

Remember, the Rocky Mountaineer presents a unique blend of elegance and exploration, providing memories that travelers will cherish for a lifetime.
