Embarking on a yacht getaway in Greece is a dream come true for many, and it’s surprisingly accessible. Prices for yacht charters can start at around 1450 euros per week, depending on the size and type of yacht, the time of year, and the specific route you choose.

When you consider the cost of hotels on the islands in Greece, this becomes a very reasonable vacation. The cost includes not just the yacht but also the services of a skipper and a hostess/chef offering a hearty breakfast and lunch (including beer and wine) each day, plus the luxury of a private cruise through the Ionian Islands. Our crew, Ana and Clara, took care of every detail from navigation, safety, and preparing delicious Greek dishes on board.

We sailed right into the enchanting towns on the Ionian Islands, staying in the heart of all the action. Most of our ports allowed us to walk straight off the boat, giving us the freedom to hike to hidden beaches, discover amazing lookout points, or simply enjoy a waterfront taverna to watch the sunset.

A Day in the Life on a Yacht Cruise

Each day, we left port around 8 am to beat the rush of tour boats to our swimming spots in the middle of the sea. As our skipper Ana cruised to our first stop, we enjoyed breakfast consisting of fruit, bread, and hot coffee or tea while Clara prepared our warm meals. Breakfast was always a delightful surprise, fueling our bodies for the adventures ahead.

Once breakfast was complete, we chose a comfortable spot on deck to enjoy stunning views of the Ionian Islands. Options ranged from cushioned lounges above, a trampoline below, lounges at the front, to seats and beds at the back.

We would pause for a swim and relaxation. While we frolicked in the water, Clara prepared our lunches, which featured fresh seafood, traditional Greek food, pasta, and salads. All meals were served with our choice of beer, wine, water, or sparkling water—truly a culinary dream.

Arriving at our daily port early in the afternoon allowed ample time to explore the town, shop, and visit nearby beaches or scenic lookout spots. Whenever we docked or anchored, snorkeling gear, paddle boards, floaties, and tubes were accessible, inviting us to enjoy the crystal-clear waters.

Two group meals took place, one at the beginning of the cruise and another at the end, where we visited a local taverna to bond over delicious Greek dishes. The rest of the evenings were spent enjoying our own plans.

Exploring the Ionian Islands

The Ionian Explorer trip with Yacht Getaways begins by setting sail from the picturesque island of Corfu. We spent three days in Corfu, allowing us to experience all the top attractions of the Old Town, dating back to the 8th century BC! Corfu boasts a rich history, with Venetian, French, and British influences evident in its architecture and culture. Unlike the Cyclades Islands of Santorini or Mykonos, Corfu features whitewashed buildings and blue domes, often reminiscent of Venice with its pastel structures and clay roofs.

Embarkation of Yacht Getaways

We caught a taxi to the Gouvia Marina in Corfu, which cost €35 from Mon Repos Palace just outside of the Old Town. Prices may be lower from downtown. Upon arrival, we met our skipper and host at the pier, who guided us to our 42-foot Catamaran where we unpacked and enjoyed a welcome drink and snacks.

The moment you step onto the boat, you know you are in for something special.

About the Yacht

Our yacht was part of the Superior Class, equipped with four cabins capable of sleeping 8 people. The back cabins are more spacious with additional storage, while the shower is separate from the toilet, providing extra comfort.

The front cabins (where we stayed) are smaller, with a shower integrated within the sink area, necessitating a shower over the toilet and sink. However, this arrangement was manageable as we often showered outside after swimming.

Cabin prices are the same across the yacht and allocated on a first-come, first-served basis. The sooner you confirm your booking, the better cabin you will secure. If contemplating a Yacht Getaway, consider it today! Ensure to ask about the availability of the larger cabins.

We had no issues with our smaller cabin; it was quieter as guests tended to congregate around the table in the back, so if you prefer an early night, the front might be the better choice.

Packing for Yacht Getaways

Pack lightly for yachting in the Greek Islands; cumbersome luggage is not advisable. There isn’t much storage space, so opt for small carry-on suitcases or a duffle bag that can be tucked beneath your bed.

For day-to-day activities on the boat, pack bathing suits, shorts or sarongs, and long-sleeved rash guard shirts for sun protection. These are great for swimming and help prevent sunburns.

Nights are casual, thus a sundress for women and smart shorts with a collared shirt for men will suffice for evening activities.

Sailing the Ionian Sea

Our first night was spent in Corfu. We left the marina and anchored in front of the Old Fort, surrounded by stunning harbor views. We enjoyed dinner onboard and watched a magnificent sunset while sipping Greek wine.

The typical itinerary heads north to Kalami Bay for meals at local restaurants. However, due to severe weather during our first night, Ana opted to seek shelter on the other side of the island, which proved to be an excellent choice as we watched an awe-inspiring lightning display safely from our boat.

Lakka Paxos: Tranquility and Turquoise Waters

The next morning dawned sunny and calm; we departed Corfu for a two-hour journey across deep blue seas. It was heavenly as we embraced the sensation of being on our private sailboat surrounded by stunning scenery.

Our first stop was Lakka, a small, tranquil village nestled within a horseshoe-shaped bay with crystal-clear turquoise waters. Rather than anchoring in the bay, Ana expertly docked right at the village, allowing us to spend the entire day paddle boarding, hiking, and swimming. We were thrilled to stay the night right in the heart of the village.

We paddled out immediately to explore nearby beaches, followed by a hike to find a secret beach.

This hidden gem requires about a 30-minute uphill walk from downtown Lakka. The trail is paved initially, leading to a rocky path towards the beach. Remember to don good running or hiking shoes and bring water, sunscreen, and your bathing suit. The journey is worth it.

Once at the top, the views alone are rewarding, giving us a stunning overlook of the harbor filled with yachts and colorful buildings lining the waterfront, making for a picturesque postcard.

Surrounded by lush greenery, charming olive groves, Lakka presents a perfect setting to unwind, swim, and soak in the peace. Enjoy strolls along the waterfront and dine in seaside tavernas offering fresh seafood dishes.

We enjoyed a group dinner in Lakka to bond with our yacht companions and settled in for an early night’s rest after a delightful day in the sun.

Logos Paxos: A Hidden Gem

Continuing our voyage, we arrived at the charming village of Logos on the island of Paxos. This picturesque harbor offers a hidden gem vibe, infused with serenity and laid-back charm. Explore the narrow streets, visit local shops showcasing artisanal goods, and enjoy a seafood dinner at a taverna while marveling at the sunset over the harbor.

At this stop, you can hike, paddleboard, swim or relax on the beach. There’s a beautiful beach with a bar just outside of town, plus a small beach near the dock. You can also find numerous waterfront cafes to savor an Aperol Spritz or two.

Gaios Paxos: Bustling Port and Greek Delights

Next up is Gaios, the capital of Paxos and our favorite stop. This bustling port town buzzes with energy, with lively nightlife events along its waterfront promenade that go until dawn. Similar to previous stops, you can explore local boutiques and cafes.

We recommend renting an e-bike or quad bike to reach the stunning Tripitos Arch, located about 3 km outside of Gaios. Take the easy cycle ride, and then walk 500 meters along a historic trail to find yourself on a coastal trail hugging dramatic cliffs.

Feel free to hike down to the impressive arch, which stands over 20 meters (65 feet) tall, and navigate across its top. Keep in mind this may not suit those susceptible to heights—the views from above are exhilarating!

Paxos possesses numerous beaches waiting to be explored. With an e-bike or quad bike, quick movement allows you to uncover various hidden gems. Don’t miss out on the bustling harbor filled with magnificent yachts or the ancient windmill nearby. Treat yourself to local tavernas offering scrumptious seafood dishes, including flavorful moussaka, grilled octopus, and baklava.

Anti-Paxos: Pristine Beaches and Azure Waters

Just a short sail from Gaios, you’ll discover the idyllic island of Anti Paxos, renowned for its stunning sea caves and powdery white-sand beaches.

Typically, the trip anchors in a secluded bay for swimming, snorkeling, and basking in the untouched beauty of this paradise. Unfortunately, strong swells prevented our normal visit, but I am eager to return someday—it is a spectacular spot!

Parga: Mainland Greece’s Coastal Beauty

Leaving the Paxos islands behind, we sailed to Parga on the mainland in Epirus. Nestled against lush hills and cliffs, Parga enchants visitors with a vibrant coastal charm and a Venetian castle looming over the bay. We adored this town; it was our second visit, and we found it even more delightful than the last! We have become determined about buying a house here someday!

Parga features beautiful beaches along with a plethora of water sports such as parasailing, boogie boarding, and water skiing. Consider the climb up to the castle for breathtaking views of the waterfront and town.

During our time in Parga, we enjoyed a wine and olive oil tasting experience.

At the Old Olive Oil factory, different regional olive oils were sampled as we learned about their production history. A key takeaway was to never buy olive oils in clear containers; metal or dark glass are preferred.

After tasting olive oils, we moved on to wines, sampling six distinct types from Greece, each one more exquisite than the last! Just €40 per person covered six generous pours during the tasting, concluded with a full glass of the favorite choice and some bruschetta bread.

Following our tasting, we strolled down to enjoy the lively waterfront scene, settling into a local taverna for fresh seafood and grilled lamb before catching the provided water taxi back to our boat.

Sivota: A Hidden Harbor

No journey through the Ionian Sea would be complete without a visit to the hidden harbor of Sivota. This fishing village is encircled by green hills and features an incredible swimming area right in the bay’s middle. We witnessed groups paddle boarding, swimming, and kayaking, and there’s a designated area roped off from boats connecting both sides. Facilities include a beach and a resort, with boards and kayaks available for rent. We spent the afternoon luxuriating in calm waters, relishing our meal of Greek mezes and refreshing local wines on the boat.

Eventually, we moved to a more tranquil cove on the opposite side of the bay, where we anchored for the night. Dinner awaited us at a nearby restaurant just minutes from our boat.

After a steep yet pleasant 15-minute walk from our marina into the town, we were rewarded with a vibrant assortment of restaurants and shops along the waterfront.

Back to Corfu

The next day was a full delight on the water as we stopped at the Blue Lagoon for snorkeling, paddle boarding, and cave exploration.

We departed Sivota early to avoid the tour boats from Paxos and Corfu; our early rising meant we reached the area before anyone else. As others arrived over an hour later, we basked in the peace of the cave, beach, and pristine waters all to ourselves. Once the larger tour boats awkwardly filled, we set sail for high seas once more.

Sailing towards Corfu, we took turns at the helm as Ana taught us sailing basics. We relished our final day aboard, soaking up the sunny breeze while Clara prepared our lunch, which we enjoyed just below the Old Fort of Corfu.

One last refreshing dip in the sea became our parting gift before heading back to the marina.

Our final night unfolded peacefully on board, yet we opted for a leisurely stroll into Gouvia, just ten minutes away, to have our last meal outdoors.

As our Yacht Getaway wound down, we drifted to sleep with the gentle waves of the marina rocking us into a serene night.
