Epirus has it all. Therefore, we’re going to share an itinerary for traveling through this secret corner of Greece, helping you create your own unforgettable journey.
Where is Epirus, Greece?
Epirus is situated in the northwest corner of Greece, bordered by Albania and the Ionian Sea. It is approximately a 1 hour 15-minute flight to the capital of Epirus, Ioannina (pronounced Yo-ah-nah-nah) from Athens. Alternatively, you can rent a car to experience the stunning Greek countryside. Driving from Athens to Ioannina typically takes about 4 hours and 30 minutes, offering a scenic journey that showcases the natural beauty of Greece.
Getting Around Epirus
Renting a car is one of the best ways to navigate Greece, particularly once you leave Athens. Upon arriving in Ioannina for this trip, we enjoyed the luxury of having a private driver due to our special connection with the Epirus tourist board. However, we highly recommend renting a car from the airport in Athens for greater flexibility. The rental car costs in Greece are quite reasonable compared to other European countries, making it an attractive option for travelers. Epirus attractions are notably dispersed, which makes driving essential for covering more ground. Moreover, you may want to consider visiting Meteora along the route, known for its breathtaking views and historic monasteries. This region boasts one of the most significant monastic settlements in Greece, alongside similar sites in Ioannina and Halkidiki.
Places to Visit in Epirus, Greece

1. Ioannina
Ioannina, the capital city of the Epirus region, deserves at least two to three days for a complete experience. We chose to stay at the Hotel du Lac Congress Centre, which served as a fantastic base for exploring all top attractions, concluding each day with delicious three-hour dinners that epitomize Greek hospitality. Expect long days filled with sightseeing and gastronomic delights!
Lake Pamvotida
On your first day in Ioannina, embark on a short 10-minute ferry ride to the Island of Lake Pamvotida. This enchanting island hosts seven Byzantine monasteries dating back to the 13th century. As you explore the island, be sure to visit the Ali Pasha Museum, which showcases remarkable artifacts and the intriguing history of the region.
Cave of Perema
Another remarkable spot in Ioannina is the Cave of Perema, located just a few kilometers from the town center. As one of the largest caves in Greece, it features thousands of stunning stalactites and stalagmites, offering a guided 45-minute tour through its grand chambers.
