Oman is a country overflowing with historical forts and castles. With over 500 castles, forts, towers, and various fortifications, this Middle Eastern nation provides a glimpse into its unique past.

Many of these structures were erected in the 17th and 18th centuries to defend Oman’s coast, and thanks to significant restoration efforts, they remain in remarkable condition today!

Best Oman Tours

If you wish to explore Oman with a knowledgeable tour guide and private vehicle, Klook is an excellent choice.

While Oman may not be the most affordable travel destination, Klook offers Rustaq day tours beginning at $65 USD, along with Nizwa tours at similar prices. Both tours depart from Muscat, allowing you to experience some of the finest Omani castles, forts, and traditional markets.

Having used Klook for various activities worldwide, I can confidently recommend their services.

5 Best Oman Forts & Castles

• An Naman Castle

While An Naman Castle may not be widely recognized, it is undeniably one of the most photogenic. Recently reopened after extensive restoration, entry to the castle is free!

• Al Hazm Castle

Although Al Hazm Castle is lesser-known, it is worth a visit. The fort’s interior features various intriguing rooms, including secret chambers, prisons, and storerooms for dates; numerous historic artifacts, such as cannons and old rifles, are also on display. An audio guide is available for free, providing valuable insights into Omani life during the 18th century.

During my visit, despite feeling somewhat fatigued from exploring numerous forts, the view from the top was rewarding. Keep in mind to stay hydrated, as the climb can be very hot depending on the season. Al Hazm is situated near Rustaq, making it easily accessible if you plan to see other nearby forts.

Where I Stayed

I stayed at the 2-star Mutrah Hotel in Muscat, where I booked a private room for $38 USD per night. Although Oman is not considered a budget-friendly destination, my accommodation was spacious, clean, and well-equipped with a cold A/C unit.

The hotel’s location is another advantage, as it is situated close to a mini-mart, the Mutrah Souq (traditional market), and other fascinating spots. Be sure to check for competitive rates, as prices can fluctuate periodically.
