Initially, I considered skipping the Hengifoss hike due to overcast weather, uncertain of the falls’ worthwhile appearance. However, I’m incredibly grateful I seized the opportunity to visit!
The hike to Hengifoss typically requires about one hour, and the views along the way are simply breathtaking. While it’s not technically challenging, there is a notable elevation gain of approximately 300 meters (980 feet).
During the trek, you will cross several streams and sheep fences. Fortunately, bridges are available to facilitate these crossings, making the journey quite manageable.
In addition to the drone shots available online, capturing stunning photographs from ground level is also quite feasible.
At 130 meters (420 feet), Hengifoss stands as the second tallest waterfall in Iceland, making it a must-see natural wonder!
Litlanesfoss Waterfall
As you hike toward Hengifoss, you will encounter Litlanesfoss—a beautiful two-step waterfall located approximately one kilometer into the trek. Comparable to the renowned Svartifoss waterfall at Skaftafell, Litlanesfoss is framed by stunning basalt rock columns.

How To Get To Hengifoss Waterfall
Hengifoss is situated around 700 kilometers (430 miles) east of Reykjavik. From Egilsstadir, travel along the Ring Road (Route 1) towards Fellabaer.
You don’t require a four-wheel drive vehicle to access Hengifoss; any two-wheel drive can reach the parking area, from which a one-hour hike advances to the waterfall. You can follow this Google Maps walking route from the parking lot to the waterfall.
As of 2024, visitors can enjoy the hike without any parking or entrance fees.
