Summary
Okay, let’s play a little game. There’s this little well-known theory (little well known because I just made it up) that most travellers fall into one of 7 categories. Therefore, for a little bit of enjoyable afternoon fun, we’re going to determine which group you belong to. The groups are:
The Holiday Makers:
Typically found travelling around their mutually agreed work holiday schedules, these travellers tend not to be too worried about the destination as long as it’s different from their norm. They strive to escape at least twice a year for long, indulgent vacations. Moreover, they see travel as a chance to kill two birds with one stone – enjoying their time while discovering new travel destinations.
Functional Traveller:
The archetypal Functional Traveller is your business traveller. Travel is a necessary means to an end, not an end in itself. They may sometimes immerse themselves in travel but, on the whole, are typically consumed with their tasks or too exhausted to fully appreciate the destinations they visit.
The Backpackers:
They quite literally travel far and light, refusing to be burdened by convention. They embrace every adventurous opportunity. For instance, if there’s a chance to go skinny dipping at midnight, they’re all in. Ironically, as much as they rebel against rules, they are easily identified by their backpacks which give them both flexibility and comfort.
The Thrill Seekers:
Adrenaline junkies and daredevils, these travellers explore far and wide to find the world’s highest bungee jump or the tallest mountain to conquer. You will not find these individuals lounging on a St Barths beach or relaxing by a hotel’s infinity pool.
The Gap Year’ers:
This group is not only made up of backpackers but also those who decide to experience new destinations for an extended period. They are defined by their intention to stay abroad for as long as possible, caring less about how they travel—be it by backpack or fully packed suitcase—as long as they encounter new experiences, perhaps even learning a new language along the way.
The Frequent Weekenders:
They often defy the rules of “The Holiday Makers” and seize every opportunity to travel during weekends and bank holidays. Financially stable, they understand that to nurture their travel passion, they often must maximize every weekend, making each moment count to explore as much of the world as possible.
The Groupies:
Travelling in packs, this lively group brings energy and fun wherever they go. Though they usually prefer group travel, they are not bound by it and often venture solo when they feel inclined. This adventurous group encourages each other to enjoy diverse experiences during their travels.
And there you have it! Some people may fit neatly into one category, while others might find bits of themselves in multiple categories. So, which one(s) do you identify with?
