This one-week itinerary will allow you to experience the best of what the area has to offer, focusing on Mérida for the first three days, visiting the Chichen Itza archaeological site on day four, and spending the remaining days at the beach in Cancun.
Mérida Itinerary – Days 1 to 4
Mérida, located in the state of Yucatan, is a colonial city that presents a unique charm. This city, known as the “White City” due to its clean white stone buildings, was founded in 1542, built atop the ruins of the ancient Maya city of T’ho. Throughout the year, Mérida hosts numerous cultural events, concerts, theater productions, and art exhibits. Keep in mind that the weather in Mérida tends to be hot and humid, so plan your wardrobe accordingly.

Travelers can fly into Mérida’s international airport (MID).
Spend 3 Days in Mérida
- Day 1 – Begin with a walking tour of the city, or alternatively opt for a double-decker sightseeing bus or a horse-drawn carriage. Conclude your day with a visit to the Museo de Antropologia (Anthropology Museum).
- Day 2 – Plan an excursion to Uxmal, a magnificent Maya archaeological site.
- Day 3 – Enjoy a day trip to Celestun National Wildlife Refuge to observe flamingos, notably best from March to August.
Chichen Itza – Day 4
Chichen Itza was the hub of Maya civilization between 750 and 1200 A.D., recognized as the most significant Maya archaeological site. During your visit, you will discover that it is just one of many remarkable sites in the region.
Day Four in Chichen Itza:
Situated between Mérida and Cancun, Chichen Itza is approximately an hour and a half drive from Mérida and two hours from Cancun. You have the option to rent a car or take the ADO bus from Mérida to reach Chichen Itza.
- Day 4 – Depart Mérida and proceed towards Cancun, visiting the awe-inspiring archaeological site of Chichen Itza along the way. Explore the site and take time to marvel at the ruins. You may also opt for a refreshing swim at Cenote Ik Kil before continuing your journey to Cancun.
Cancún Itinerary – Days 5 to 7
Cancun, located on the Yucatan Peninsula in the state of Quintana Roo, is the most prominent and favored resort area in Mexico. Known for its spectacular beaches, luxurious hotels, fine dining, impressive nearby Maya archaeological sites, and diverse activities, it’s no surprise that Cancun attracts approximately three million tourists annually.
Getting there: Cancun is served by an International Airport (CUN). However, for those traveling from Mérida (200 miles away), consider going overland to visit Chichen Itza on your route.
Days 5 to 7 in Cancun
- Day 5 – Experience the Mesoamerican reef, which is the world’s second-largest coral reef, by joining a scuba diving or snorkeling adventure.
- Day 6 – Take a day excursion to Tulum, a stunning archaeological site located on the coast to the south of Cancun, and visit Xel-Ha, a water theme park.
- Day 7 – Relax on the beach, sip on a piña colada or your favorite drink, and hone your sandcastle-building skills.
