There is no doubt about it; I possess a profound admiration for this beautiful island nation. Barbados is both enchanting and stunning, especially when one considers the many exceptional experiences to partake in while visiting.
There are numerous activities available on this remarkable Caribbean island, so do not fall into the misconception that it is solely a destination for relaxation by the pool or sunbathing. The culture, cuisine, natural history, and warm-hearted residents all contribute to making Barbados a perfect location to savor authentic Caribbean life.
This is the reason I wish to present to you some of the prime attractions in Barbados that are essential to your travel itinerary.
Examine the various activities you can partake in during your visit. I sincerely hope you have a wonderful time discovering and enjoying the best that Barbados has to offer. Enjoy your journey!
1.) Swim with turtles
I stayed at The Club Hotel in Barbados, which organizes specific excursions (conducted on the hotel’s boat) to the preferred habitats of these gentle creatures.
This activity is among the top experiences in Barbados, particularly for wildlife enthusiasts.
Swim along the shoreline and around the boat, and you are likely to encounter several turtles. Just keep in mind to respect their habitat and avoid touching or trying to interact with the turtles.
2.) Discover a hidden beach
All beaches in Barbados are open for public access. This important principle ensures that everyone can appreciate the breathtaking beauty of its stunning coastline. It is a legacy I wish more nations would adopt.
One significant advantage of this regulation is that you can actively seek your own little oasis.
Each day, I visited a secluded cove beach approximately a thirty-minute walk from The Club Hotel; it was immaculate, with nobody else around except for a few amicable starfish to accompany me!
3.) Discover Animal Flower Cave
Situated at the northernmost point of the island, Animal Flower Cave presents an excellent starting point for exploring the more untamed and dramatic eastern coast of Barbados.
Embark on an underground journey as you explore the caves for a breathtaking vista of the Atlantic Ocean. Just be cautious with your footing… I once spilled my rum punch down those very steps… unfortunate!
This certainly ranks as one of the top experiences in Barbados for those who appreciate the more rugged aspects of the island.
4.) Sail the Caribbean Sea
Experience a charming afternoon on a catamaran. I opted for this adventure with The Calabaza Barbados.
Participant numbers were kept low (ranging from 6 to 8 individuals), and we had our own guide dedicated to tracking the local wildlife in the Caribbean waters. Honestly, this was one of the primary reasons why I found this tour to be the most enjoyable.
The experience felt intimate, small, and welcoming.
5.) Visit a piece of Scotland
Indeed, you read that correctly!
Early English settlers to Barbados believed that the east coast of Barbados bore a striking resemblance to Scotland. Ascend into the hilly region of the island and assess this claim for yourself.
It is relatively straightforward to navigate and explore independently (if you have access to a vehicle). Ensure to traverse the entire island, as it houses an abundance of remarkable experiences and attractions that are spread throughout the country.
6.) Indulge at Oistins Fish Fry
The Oistins Fish Fry is a local gathering spot, frequented by both visitors and residents alike, making it an ideal location to spend a lively Friday evening.
Select from a delightful array of dishes, observe locals engaged in domino games, and immerse yourself in the vibrant Caribbean music that fills the atmosphere. It is truly a delightful way to conclude a Friday night on the island.
This experience certainly ranks as an essential activity to engage in during your time in Barbados. It is thoroughly enjoyable!
7.) Experience ‘Dolphin’ Cuisine
Remarkably, this is actually Mahi-Mahi, but locals colloquially refer to it as ‘dolphin.’ Rest assured, it is not actual dolphin you are consuming.
This delectable gustatory delight is especially prevalent in the Southern Caribbean. Pair it with some fried plantains and a touch of Bajan Pepper Sauce! Those adhering to a vegetarian diet may wish to consider alternative options.
8.) Traverse the Rainforests
Approximately 40 minutes north of the capital city, Bridgetown, lie some of the most stunning forests in Barbados. Take a drive and head straight to this lush landscape; an ideal location for hiking enthusiasts!
The best part is, there are no venomous snakes or spiders to concern yourself with, so feel free to explore to your heart’s content.
9.) Engage with the Military
This encounter was quite spontaneous. During my journey to the forest, I stumbled upon two local soldiers who were patrolling the area. The individual on the left appeared rather stern, largely due to the fact that the soldier on the right was eager for me to capture his photograph, while the left soldier seemed less inclined.
However, they were genuinely friendly when engaged in conversation!
10.) Visit Bathsheba Beach
Located on the east coast of the island, Bathsheba Beach features an unspoiled rock-strewn landscape shaped by the Atlantic Ocean.
Enjoy a scenic drive along the coastline to explore the region, including some local rum distilleries that adorn the route. This is certainly a noteworthy experience in Barbados, especially if you are already exploring the rugged coast.
11.) Indulge in delectable fish bites
Fish bites are a local delicacy that are truly exceptional! I consumed an entire basket in mere moments (or perhaps minutes). All are freshly prepared each morning and sourced locally.
They are delightful and completely addictive!
12.) Explore Speightstown
One of Barbados’s larger towns, Speightstown is an excellent location to spend a morning delving into the island’s history.
I ventured into the Museum of Barbados located centrally in the town, followed promptly by indulging in a generous serving of ice cream.
Amazingly, amidst my indulgence in sugary treats, I somehow managed to get lost, but this unexpectedly led to a delightful exploration of the town.
13.) Visit St. Nicholas Abbey
St. Nicholas Abbey stands as one of Barbados’s finest country estates and rum distilleries. I must admit, I was quite inebriated after leaving, as their rum punch is exceedingly delightful. The number of images I had to edit straight was a testament to this experience.
One key takeaway from this experience is to ensure you have a designated driver. You will likely want to sample an array of rums.
14.) Relax
Just like any idyllic island, Barbados offers ample chances to unwind.
Procure a cocktail, apply some sunblock, and make your way down to the beach.
