It may not come as a surprise that I am a strong advocate for blogging, enjoying not only the writing aspect but also the pleasure of reading various blogs. I would go so far as to suggest that I devote more time to reading blogs than I do to writing them.
Previously, I have published articles discussing the benefits of starting a blog, and if anyone inquires whether they should embark on this journey, my answer is consistently a resounding yes!
I did not initiate my blogging journey to maintain contact with family or friends around the globe (this is not to say that you should not start a blog for such purposes; I utilize Facebook and WhatsApp for those interactions). My motivation stemmed from a desire to share my experiences and, more importantly, to learn from others’ journeys.
This is something I continually engage in.
Though I may not respond to comments as quickly as I would like, I make a point of reading them upon arrival on my phone, as they truly matter to me.
While extensive advice exists about why to commence a blog, how to launch a blog, and possibly even on creating a notable blog, I believe several critical aspects are often overlooked.
Consequently, I felt it beneficial to compose a brief post outlining the considerations of initiating a blog that are seldom discussed.
1.) There is no obligation to pay £10 for a domain name
Occasionally, you may need to pay £1 or £2 at most, but often you can obtain it for free through the hosting package you choose. There are numerous hosting options available, so select one with satisfactory reviews and a suitable array of complimentary features before proceeding (some even offer Google/Facebook advertising credits).
2.) Expecting rapid success is impractical
Moreover, such expectations may diminish the overall joy of blogging. Contrary to popular belief, growth occurs in substantial increments over time. Establishing small, achievable goals, celebrating their accomplishment, and then setting new ones is a more fulfilling approach that sustains motivation. (Even exceptionally gifted students who skip several grades do not receive their high school diplomas or GCSEs overnight!)
3.) A lack of interest in your blog’s content can lead to resentment
During the initial stages of your blogging journey, when striving to connect with a broader audience, the driving force that will sustain you through challenging times (especially when your readership is minimal) is the passion you possess for your subject matter.
4.) Expect to outgrow your initial web hosting service
Whether due to rising traffic or an increase in stored content (especially if you are self-hosted via WordPress), it is likely you will need to upgrade or migrate to a different host (which can be a cumbersome process, particularly if not planned in advance, so remain vigilant).
5. Some posts may not resonate with your audience
Those articles where you invested significant time in writing, researching, and editing may not garner the appreciation you anticipate. However, this is entirely acceptable! It can be challenging to predict which posts will resonate, but attempting to do so is not productive.
As long as you feel passionate about your content, it should not matter if some receive less attention. Experimentation and exploration of new ideas is the only way to discover what resonates with both yourself and your readers.
6.) You will need to dedicate additional time to promote your blog
After all, how else will others know about your offerings if they don’t hear the sizzle of your steak dinner? 🙂
7.) Inspiration can strike at the most unexpected moments
Such moments could occur while you are showering, amidst a chaotic dinner preparation, or perhaps trapped on a crowded train.
Nevertheless, it is essential to record these moments as soon as possible; otherwise, you may forget them entirely if not noted down promptly. If you manage to recall them days later, chances are they will only be a diluted version of the brilliant idea originally conceived.
8.) Different social media platforms operate dissimilarly
Do not assume that strategies effective on Facebook will yield similar results on Instagram. Conversely, do not critique yourself for posts that do not flourish on all platforms, as they could thrive elsewhere.
The primary objective is to recognize what is effective for each platform (which can vary significantly) and focus your efforts on those strategies that work best for you.
9.) The temptation to mimic others
Even when it is challenging to assess your path to success, it is crucial to remain authentic to who you are.
It is perfectly acceptable to derive inspiration from aspects of other individuals’ blogs or lives, but striving to replicate another person or their blog will rarely yield positive outcomes and will not bring you fulfillment.
10.) Many bloggers present an idealized view that might create unrealistic expectations
In reality, everyone expends significant effort developing their blogs (even those who appear to have things easy), so during your own hard work, take solace in knowing you are not alone and that your commitment is exactly what is needed for your blog’s success.
I aim to maintain a realistic perspective on blogging at GoTravelDaily, which is why I often discuss methods for saving money or engaging in free activities, even though I occasionally indulge in more costly experiences during the same trips.
For example, during our USA road trip, we chose to splurge on accommodations at the Bellagio yet opted for economical snacks at gas stations during our drive to Las Vegas.
To be fair, all four of us appreciate the beef jerky available in the US!
Let us be realistic; unless you are exceptionally affluent, a save and splurge approach aligns more closely with the majority of our financial circumstances.
11.) Full-time blogging is not for everybody, nor should it be viewed as a prerequisite for success
I genuinely appreciate the ability to earn income through blogging, yet it constitutes more of a potential* by-product rather than a definitive measurement of success (and I emphasize the term potential as it is not assured).
Individuals pursue blogging for various reasons.
Establish your objectives based on your desires and, upon achieving them, recognize that you have succeeded because you accomplished something you aspired to long before you knew it was attainable.
